Dariel Alvarez is Red Hot at the Plate for the Norfolk Tides

Baltimore Orioles' fans have a pretty good knowledge of Norfolk Tides' outfielder Dariel Alvarez, but did you know that he is absolutely scorching at the plate right now for the Tides?

Alvarez, 27, has seen limited time with the Orioles at the big league level, but is continuing to prove that he can handle the bat.

Outside of his very brief stints with Baltimore this season, Alvarez has spent most of the year with the AAA Tides and has been a force in the lineup.

Overall this season, Alvarez is hitting .291 with 32 doubles, four home runs, 42 RBI and has scored 40 runs in 107 games with Norfolk. He also owns a .325 on base percentage and despite being somewhat of a free swinger, he has only struck out 67 times over 458 plate appearances.

We also know that Alvarez has a cannon in the outfield, which many scouts consider him to have the best outfield arm in the organization. Over 93 games played in the outfield this season for Norfolk, Alvarez already has 10 outfield assists.

As I mentioned earlier, Alvarez is currently red hot at the plate right now.

From July 8-August 4 (excludes his brief time in Baltimore), Alvarez compiled a 20-game hitting streak that saw him raise his average 17 points over that stretch.

After seeing that hitting streak come to an end on August 5th (followed by an O'fer the next day as well), Alvarez picked it right back up with three-straight multi-hit efforts, including a 4-4 night on Tuesday.

It's pretty evident how well Alvarez is hitting at the AAA level as his 125 hits this season are third-most in the International League and his 32 doubles ranks second.

With rosters expanding on September 1, I have little doubt that Alvarez is going to be a bench piece for Buck Showalter during the stretch run, especially when you consider the fact that he is hitting .340 this season against left-handed pitchers, an area the Orioles have struggled.

  1. Am I the only one that thinks Alvarez could help the Orioles right now? I mean the guy is hitting .340 against LHP this season at Norfolk and the O's struggle mightily against lefties.....
