Chris Dickerson, Pitching Staff Help Lead Norfolk Tides to Victory Over Norfolk State University

The AAA Norfolk Tides hosted the Norfolk State University Spartans for a seven-inning exhibition game at Harbor Park on Tuesday. The Tides used great pitching and the bat of outfielder Chris Dickerson to cruise to a 7-0 victory.

Dickerson led off the bottom of the first with a double and later scored to give the Tides a 1-0 lead. He delivered a two-run homer in the fourth inning to build the lead to 7-0.

Also chipping in on offense were Pedro Alvarez and Chance Sisco who delivered RBI singles, and both Michael Choice and Paul Janish had sac flies as well.

The pitching staff delivered a strong performance in their final tune-up before the regular season, led by right-handed pitcher Alec Asher who got the start.

Asher tossed three shutout innings with four strikeouts. He retired nine of the ten batters he faced.

Following Asher were right-handers Logan Verrett, Parker Bridwell, Stefan Crichton, Jimmy Yacabonis and Scott McGough. The group combined to strike out 12 over the final four innings while allowing just two hits.

On the NSU side, third baseman Justin Burrell and outfielder Troy White picked up the lone hits for the Spartans.

The game, which was the seventh over the past eight years, drew 4,566 fans to Harbor Park, which is celebrating it's 25th anniversary this season.

One of the things that I like most about the game is the fact that all ticket proceeds from the game benefit the Norfolk State University baseball program, which is just another way the Tides help out their local community, which is always a good thing.

Norfolk State, who lead the North Division in the MEAC, will return to action this weekend with a three-game series against Delaware State.

Norfolk will begin their season on Thursday on the road as they travel to Charlotte to take on the Knights with Mike Wright getting the start on the mound. Their first home game will be Monday against the Gwinnett Braves.
