Delmarva Shorebirds Involved in Historic 6-6 Tie, 20 Innings Played and Still Going (Resumes Friday Evening)

The more experienced and savvy Baltimore Orioles' fans are aware that an O's affiliate was involved in the longest game in professional baseball when the Rochester Red Wings played a 33-inning game against the Pawtucket Red Sox back in 1981. Fast forward to 2017 and the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds played 20 innings Thursday night against the Lexington Legends and a winner has yet to be decided.

The game was suspended at 1:07 AM Friday morning, after the game went into a rain delay 12 minutes earlier, with the two teams still tied at six.

It is already the longest game in Shorebirds history, which spans 22 years and 3,002 games. Previously, the Shorebirds had played in two 19-inning games.

Not only will it be the longest game in Shorebirds history, but it will also be the longest in the South Atlantic League this season, and one of the longest in the history of Minor League Baseball.

Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Alejandro Juvier delivered the game-tying single, scoring Preston Palmeiro and knotting the game at six. Neither team has scored over the last 11 innings of the game.

Delmarva almost ended the game in the bottom of the 20th when they had runners on the corners with two outs and Cole Billingsley nearly beat out a deep ground ball to second base for the final out of the frame.

Some interesting things to note about the game thus far:

  • Both catchers caught all 20 innings
  • Lexington's Khalil Lee has struck out seven times in the game
  • Cole Billingsley has recorded 10 at bats in the game
  • The pitching staffs have combined to strikeout 49 batters against just 10 walks
  • 16 of the original 18 in the starting lineups (excludes pitchers) have played the entire 20 innings
  • Four Shorebirds' pitchers have combined for 12-consecutive shutout innings while allowing seven hits, three walks and 18 strikeouts (Bray, Klimek, Trowbridge, and Groves).
  • No Shorebirds hitter has more than three hits
  • Delmarva is 4-21 with runners in scoring position
  • Lexington is 3-18 with runners in scoring position
  • The two teams have combined to leave 30 men on base
The game will resume this evening at 6:05 p.m. with the regularly scheduled game for today being played after the conclusion of this game.

It's going to be fun to see how many more innings this game goes on, and hopefully, the Shorebirds come out on top!
