RHP Leonardo Rodriguez Off to Impressive Start in 2017 for DSL Orioles

You very rarely hear about the Dominican Summer League, but we here at Baby Birdland want to keep you updated on the entire Baltimore Orioles' minor league system, and that includes the Dominican Summer League. Right-handed pitcher Leonardo Rodriguez is off to an impressive start to the 2017 season.

Rodriguez, 19, was signed by the Orioles last November and he is making both his organization and MLB-affiliated professional debut this year.

What immediately catches your eye when you look him up is the fact that he is 6-foot, 7-inches tall and weighs 215 pounds. We are talking about a very tall pitcher here and given his weight, I would tend to believe he is a bit lanky as well.

I'll be honest, I have not seem him pitch in person. It's kind of hard to get down to the Dominican, but in looking at his numbers, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that he is off to an impressive start.

Rodriguez has made six starts thus far in 2017 and has compiled a 1.93 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP over 28 innings pitched.

In addition, he has held opponents to a .216 batting average, while striking out 24 and walking just eight.

He has yet to allow a single home run this season and something that impresses me is the fact that he is holding opponents to a .120 batting average with runners in scoring position. It's always nice to see a pitcher really bare down in those pressure situations.

Over his six starts, he has only allowed more than one earned run once, and that came in his first start of the season when he allowed two earned runs.

Obviously we do not know a ton about him, but it's great to see a 19-year old get his Orioles' minor league career off to such a great start, especially since he is a pitcher. I would anticipate the O's let Rodriguez pitch the whole year with the DSL Orioles, but next season, especially if he continues to pitch this way, we may very well see him State-side with a more local affiliate.
